Professor Ali, head of Maritime Archaeology from the School of Archaeology in one of the universities in Malaysia, was granted RM3 million grant to float a sunken ship known as Flor De La Mar. The ship once carried a Portuguese explorer Alfonso de Albuquerque and its treasures from the Malacca Sultanate, when it sank in 1511. The treasure on that ship believed to be worth USD2 million. Professor Ali need to purchase equipment that should be able to provide an understanding of the differences in material and texture type of the seabed. The equipment however, must be environment friendly. Professor Ali sought advice from Sea Technology Sdn. Bhd., a company that specialised in high technology electronic instrumentation and mechanical equipment. The company consultant advised Professor Ali to purchase Echoscope the underwater sonar that can generate over 16,000 beams per acoustic transmission and with a frame rate of over 10 pings per second. Echoscope sonars can provide unique underwater 3D acoustic movie imagery where user can view the subsea scene in real time using patented 3D rendering techniques. In January 2016 Professor Ali purchase the sonar for RM450,000. The undersea project started in February 2016 in Strait of Malacca. However the project had to stop due to damages to marine wildlife that upset fishermen and the Malaysian public.
