Professors Arpaci-Dusseau and Lewis-Peacock believe that surname hyphenating has become more popular amongst young adult men who get married in the state of Texas. In the 1970s, only about 5% of men chose to hyphenate their name at marriage. To test their belief that in the 2020s a larger percentage of men will hyphenate, they collect a sample of n = 600 unmarried men and ask them to select their preference for their legal name if and when they should get married.
