Assignment Activity 1

Research and describe two Acts or Regulations that apply to a specific business and give details of those Acts or Regulations. Explain how they apply and what impact they have in your workplace. If you are not currently employed, then you will need to choose a local business as your case study.

Identify an environmental area of your current workplace where the business would need to seek professional advice from a suitable qualified and experienced environmental consultant. Find a suitable consultant or business that could perform this consultancy and give their details. If you are not currently employed, then you will need to choose a local business as your case study.

To complete this assignment, you will need to access information from a business or your home. Speak to the management at your workplace and seek access to details about your energy use. Show the use of electricity used in your business for a one-month period and show what the source of this information. Include any calculations you made to find this amount. If you are not able to access this information in your workplace, then use the information from your home and make the same calculations.

Assignment Activity 4

This is the same as activity 6 on the next page, but we want you to include the results in the assignment as a form of assessment. Choose at tap or water source at your business and check the flow rate in litres per minute. Describe the details of the experiment you conducted to determine this flow rate.

Research and find a local depot to recycle e-waste such as old computers, TVs and printers in your local area. Is there a cost involved? Give details of the recycling services they offer.

Look at the system that is used to purchase goods in your business and outline areas you see that could be improved. This could be by purchasing a different product, asking for better packaging, swapping to a product that produces less waste, swapping to a product that produces less waste, swapping to a more environmentally friendly product or many other reasons. Detail the products and your reasons and if possible recommend alternatives to the products you would replace or what changes you would make to existing products you would recommend.

Conduct a waste audit of your current workplace or any part or department of your current workplace. Aim for about a one week period if possible.

Assignment activity 8

Recommend one performance improvement form the results of the waste audit and set a target for that performance improvement. Explain the reasons for setting that target.

Assignment Activity 9

Detail how you would monitor the performance improvement and target that you have set in Assignment 8.

Go to the SAI Global website and research one ISO or AS standard on environmental practices relevant to your business.
