Project: DEA Licensing

For the second and last project of this chapter, we're going to look at the licensure and DEA license/process specifically for your state and in your profession.

For this project, you will submit a "report" as the final format. This means that it will be written but you do have some flexibility about how it is written. A report could be an essay or it could be answers to the questions via bullets or numbered paragraphs.

For this report, you'll need to choose a profession and a state. If you're unsure of your preferred career pathway, choose one that interests you at this moment. Remember, we are focusing on medical professionals such as doctors, physician assistants, dentists, chiropractors, pharmacists, and veterinarians. Choose either your home state or a state that you may be interested in practicing in someday.

In this report, we're also going to touch upon some elements of plagiarism. Be careful to follow the directions carefully, pay attention to when it is ok to copy text, and, when necessary, use your own words.

The report should address the following:

  1. Find and report the licensure agency name and website within your state and potential profession. For example, the Michigan entity that controls licensing for veterinarians is called the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Board of Veterinary Medicine, and their website is www.michigan.gov
  2. Next, locate the new license application site or PDF. Look for names and forms such as "New Application" or "License Application." State's websites sometimes aren't very user-friendly. If you're having trouble, consider calling the office and requesting the URL for new license application packets. Provide the URL in your report for your teacher.
  3. Within the new license application, find the page or sections that pertain to questions of professional behavior or unethical actions. Provide the page number or URL to your instructor. If your license application is web-based or requires that you fill out information before you go deeper into the application, consider using the paperwork from the chiropractor example for the rest of your report or consider looking at another state's board.
  4. Tell about what action is required if the applicant responds "yes" to any questions regarding ethical behavior or drug/alcohol convictions. For example, does the applicant have to submit an explanation? Is the applicant turned away?
  5. Does the application or any other part of the licensing website detail a requirement for providing background checks or fingerprints? If yes, summarize the requirements.
  6. The section has two parts: the first is reasons that the DEA could deny or revoke a license and the second is a definition of what factors are considered when determining if you, the candidate, have committed an act that violates the "public interest." Summarize each section for your teacher, showing that you understand what you're reading. Use your own words to summarize.
