Project Management Program Web site Design Note to students - This project is based on a real client need, but the details have been revised. The Lansdowne College portrayed in this project does not exist. Reach out to your instructor (also serving as your project sponsor) with any questions.
Bunker Hill College - Project Management Program Web site Lansdowne College was established in 1972 as an independent, liberal arts college with an undergraduate population of 3,500 students. Located in the North Carolina mountains, the College has maintained a strong reputation, is fiscally-sound (yes, even in Covid times), and has partnerships with local organizations that employ many of its students and graduates.
The College has recently started a new degree in project management, and it needs to provide information about the degree on its Web site. Currently, the information on the project management program is limited to what is provided in the program catalog. The College recognizes that there is a need to create information specifically designed to "tell the story" of the program through personal interviews with current students and alums.
This project is still in its early stages. It is an important project for the College as there is great interest in this kind of Web-based story-telling approach among other programs, including Lansdowne degrees in Communications, Analytics, and Applied Mathematics. Because of the visibility of this project, the College recognizes the need for effective planning.
As members of Project management team , you will provide consultive planning services - over the course of this semester as you create key components of the project plan - specifically, the project initiation package - for this project.
As for the scope of this project - the conceptual design of the web site needs to be approved and then detailed requirements collected for the site. The College has asked that focus groups be held with the project management program faculty, staff, students, and alums to involve them in developing these requirements. A Web design and development firm will need to be retained to complete the design and development work. In order to do this,a request for proposal (RFP) should be written, bids solicited, and a contract written for the design and development of the Web site. The project work also includes ongoing communication with Lansdowne College leaders and project management program faculty, staff, and students. The project manager will prepare progress reports at regular intervals, including, but not limited to progress on the selection of the Web design and development firm, selection of the firm, prototype review, etc.
The College has also asked for a launch party for the date when the Web site goes live. Once the Web site is complete, Lansdowne College leaders, in collaboration with leaders in the project management program, will review, provide feedback, and approve the site. Following approval, the site will be maintained by the Lansdowne College IT department.
A preliminary (very rough) draft Scope Document is provided below. Members of PJM 1100 should add additional insight to this document to best define the scope of the project as you complete the project initiation work. Get in touch with your instructor (/sponsor) with any additional questions.
