Project Overview Northern Powerhouse Rail

was established as a major rail programme to substantially enhance the economic potential of the North of England. By improving transport connections, commuters would be able to travel to work more freely, allowing the Northern cities of Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds to form one large single economy, rather than competing against one another. However, on Thursday 18th November, the government announced that it had scrapped the Leeds leg of the HS2 high-speed rail line and that the east-west line linking Manchester to Leeds will not be built. investigate the impact that these announcements will have upon the economy within Northern England. This project will provide GMCC with the macroeconomic research to fully understand thewide-ranging consequences of these announcements

Students will have access to data and other reports commissioned on Northern Powerhouse Rail.GMCC will provide a briefing to students in Week 1 to outline the project and the seven different strands within the project. Students will work in one of the seven groups, each tasked to compile separate project report on that particular strand of the project. As a minimum, the project report should include: a cover page, table of contents, executive summary, and one or more chapters on specific issues within each project strand.
