"Property" is not one thing, it is a bundle of rights. Think of your car, you can sell it, drive it, let your friend drive it, start an Uber business, convert it to a monster truck, whatever. The same is true of something called "intellectual property". Intellectual property is something that you own because of your effort and creativity, such as writing a song. It is intangible, you cannot pick up your song and throw it in the air. You may be able to pick up a CD of your song and throw it in the air, but not the song itself.

The most important right you have as a property owner is the "right to exclude others". i.e., no one can enter your property without your permission. The same is true of intellectual property. Owning intellectual property allows you the right to use it in the manner in which you wish, or sell portions of it, or "license" it to others. For example, one of the rights associated with copyright is the right to make "derivative works", simplified; sequels. Thus, "The Big Bang Theory" can start of spinoff show called "Young Sheldon." Or "Breaking Bad" can spinoff "Better Call Saul." These new shows have the right to use certain aspects of the original work but must be largely new in their content.

"Licensing" on the other hand actually contains no actual ownership rights, you only get permission to use something for a limited period of time under certain circumstances. For example, you do not actually own any of the music on your iPod. All of those songs are licensed and the only thing you are allowed to use them for is your own personal listening, you cannot share them, broadcast them, etc. Even the software on the computer or phone you are using is not actually yours, you only have a license to use it.

So the question is, what is it that you actually own? What do you have a license for? Is it disturbing that you likely thought you were "purchasing" something but actually only have the "license" to use it?
