Provide a constructive response to the following essay. After reading about the IFIs, I realized that those institutions are doing excellent work according to their missions or at least the mission for which they were created on paper. Taking an institution like the IBRD, commonly called the World Bank, created to rebuild Europe after WWII, it is difficult to say they were not doing a good job. Although there are various controversies regarding those institutions, let's analyze some concrete cases to see closer how they would be qualified based on those specific projects. The first case I will consider is a recent one where to lend money to Haiti, in 2018, the IMF asked the country to cut more government subsidies. To alleviate the tough situation of the population, the government used to subsidize the price of oil in the country. Eight days after the announcement, global demonstrations around the country, people were complaining about the oil price that would increase up to around 50% of its actual price (Perrigo, 2018). Those demonstrations cost the country even more in terms of consequences caused by the damages. In the end, the government backed off on the decisions. As a citizen, the measures requested by the IMF were not that bad if applied differently. The measures could have been put in place gradually. Maybe by increments of 10%, Colombia has done the same, increasing its oil price by increments of a few cents monthly over a one-year period. This has not created big issues in the country in terms of demonstrations. This is why people say that the IFIs, especially the IMF, don't negotiate decisions but impose them and make the poor poorer. On this, I give the institution a bronze medal for not taking into consideration the situation of the country. They did not provide the necessary technical assistance on how to apply the measures. Another project I want to consider is an investment of $225 million project in the improvement of the electricity sector in the Dominican Republic. The funds have been approved in December 2023 and will benefit more than 800,000 people from various sectors in the country (World Bank, 2023). I give this project a silver medal because sometimes the disbursement of the IFIs is a heavy process and time for the population to see the result might be very long. In general, it is a great project and that is why from the beginning of the paper, it was mentioned that the IFIs are doing a great job that should be announced for a broader public to know. In southern Africa, in Eswatini, the World Bank group funded a Sanitation and Clean water project for one of the poorest regions. The project will benefit around 38,000 people to have access to clean water. I give this project a gold medal because there is a tendency that the IFIs tend to neglect the black countries or they rarely bring a project that really empowers them or takes them out of poverty. This project is very positive because it has impacts beyond the simple access to clean water; it has impacts on public health and education also. If the water is more accessible, less time children will need to spend to get water for the household and more time for education. It also helps another group that is under the radar of the SDGs, the women. Besides the fact that the IFIs have many things to review in their approaches and they will review them for a better world, they have done many good things that can serve as a guide in the way to address the problems. The approaches need to be more integrated within the context of the realities of each country. Not two countries are facing the same realities and thus can take the copy-paste of measures applied in other countries
