7. Define "hyperbole," giving at least two (2) examples.
8. Per Judith Boss' definition of "sarcasm," does this term mean the same as "throwing shade"? Be clear and tell why or why not?

Part 2: Field Work: Explore Your World

Please make this part of the homework meaningful and real. Read/process the academic expressions of these concepts in your text, then conduct field work to see how they show up in your world all the time, without your recognizing their "academic forms." You can observe family members, talking with friends, viewing campus/community literature.... You can also watch television and get the meanings. Be sure to provide real contexts and participants so your instructor has a complete information to process.

Spend a few days consciously exploring your world for examples of rhetorical devices. Stroll campus offices, read campus publications, walk through the grocery store and/or "listen" to conversations, including yours, then complete the following assignment:

a) document two examples of written or verbal sarcasm (or perhaps "throwing shade")

You must provide a clear context, along with where the event occurred and an exact replication of the language.

b) document two examples of hyperbole (same criteria as for #a)

c) document three examples of euphemisms. These are all around you, and so are the hyperboles.
