1. Select one of the following health insurance consumers: an employee with ESHI, an individual without access to ESHI and not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare, a traditional Medicare enrollee, a Medicare Part C enrollee, a Medicaid enrollee. From the perspective of this health insurance consumer (i.e., use first-person voice), describe and explain the intent and result of the most important regulations that impact your health insurance experience.
2. In this class, we covered several important provisions of the Affordable Care Act. From the perspective of a primary care doctor (i.e., use the first-person voice), explain the ways in which you have modified your practice, if at all, in response to at least one specific ACA provision. Be sure to clearly describe the provision and explain how it has impacted your profession, generally, as well.
3. Adverse selection is a serious problem for health insurers, especially when they are restricted in classifying risks. Explain one regulatory measure that is intended to reduce the impact of adverse selection or to reduce adverse selection itself. How is the measure working, theoretically and in practice?
4. The government can use several different mechanisms to "control" the cost of health care services. Compare and contrast the intent and outcomes of two such mechanisms exercised by either a state or the federal government.
5. With advancing technology, health providers and health insurers have opportunities to amass "big data" on patients. Briefly describe the legal and ethical challenges associated with ensuring that patient data is shared for "appropriate" purposes.
