Some factors that can cause change to fail are communication and unclear vision. If the goals or vision for the organization are not clear, then employees don't know which way to pivot. If communication isn't clear or passed all the way through the ranks, then it feels like a huge disconnect and then trust is lost and employees feel less and less secure. Our book says there are "fiveprincipalcomponentsthatareintegraltoanysuccessfulcompany:leadership,strategy,culture,structure,andsystems."(Weiss,2016, ch4.3) I would agree in the change that failed in my company the leadership and structure was not well planned. There was no communicated strategy. While communication isn't listed as a pillar it should be, I would guess it's under the strategy pillar.

I would use Blackberry as a company that failed to strategize and refused to change. They were the top dog for so long that they didn't think anyone would take that spot. "Blackberry was slow to change and just delivered a product that worked and iterating on what worked." (Apollonia, 2019) In 2004 when iPhone4 passed Blackberry sales for the second year in a row that was a huge red flag for the company to revisit it's strategy and systems. It was a failure in leadership to not recognize the change in the market and start triaging their products and services. Blackberry like Apple iPhones are a status symbol and where Apple branched out with products and it's on its own proprietary IOS software. Blackberry just relied on name recognition and status, not having the forethought to listen to consumers and research what consumers wanted. Map a new strategy to maintain their lead shares in the market. Now they are defunct and Cautionary tale to other businesses of what can happen when you don't recognize the changes in your business arena.

Change is required to stay at the top of your game as an organization and part of that change requires innovation to compete, one famous organization that did not adapt to change refusing to innovate and failed is Polaroid. The film company was best known for it's instant film and cameras, the business model was to capitalize on the success that they had in film and not to look beyond what they were good at. The company went bankrupt in 2001 and their intellectual property remained in bankruptcy until 2017 when the retro versions were relaunched (Goh, 2021).

The innovation by other camera companies to explore digital medias and cameras that were able to give instant photos that were digital took over the market and the lack of willingness to change and innovate sank the Polaroid brand. Failure to recognize the need for change is one of the number one reasons businesses fail from the top-down, "IMB, Digital Equipment Corporation, Polaroid, and General Motors were still resting on their past successes, because they believed they could continue to dominate their industries" (Weiss, 2016, sect 4.1). Pride comes before the fall and that is a great saying for these large companies, they were too proud of themselves and that pride led to their failure. If the leadership of Polaroid were able to recognize the change needed to pivot and innovate or use their size to acquire the technology needed for digital photography they may have been able to avoid bankruptcy and retain their place at the top of the market.
