PSYC 3142 Celebration of Learning #2 SPSS Analyses & Interpretation Use SPSS and the WOWCAT project #1 class dataset (WOWCAT for 3142_Project #1 SPSS file.say) to run and report the following descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. (150 points total) 1) You are interested in learning whether there is a relationship for the WOWCAT coping & resources (WOOKNOW) and age. Remember that on the WOWCAT, a higher score always indicates better adjustment. Find and read the labels for the 10 individual WOWCAT coping & resources items. Calculate the total score for this summary measure by first reverse-scoring any needed items so higher indicates better adjustment (rather than worse). Then, create the average of the 10 items in the coping & resources scale. Call your new variable WOOKNOWme. Provide a snip, copy, or photo of your syntax (the log on your output file or saved as a syntax file) so I can see how, specifically, you calculated this scale score. By the way, if you did it right, your scores should equal the ones in the data set (so, for example, WOOKNOW.me that you create should have the same values as WOOKNOW variable that I calculated previously). Thus, since the overall WOWCAT scale subscale scores are already provided, it is imperative for you to snip & paste your syntax in the Appendix so I know that you understand how to rescore and calculate a subscale total score properly. (30 points) 2) Now, for the entire sample (after reverse scoring the items you need to), use SPSS to determine and describe the overall reliability (Cronbach's alpha) of the 10 items in this measure. Indicate whether this subscale has sufficient reliability for use in research. Describe the pattern of correlations amongst individual items in the matrix. Indicate if any items could/should be removed to increase the overall reliability and what you are using to make this decision. (20 points) 3) Finally, establish a reasonable DIRECTIONAL research hypothesis to statistically test whether age relates to WOOKNOWme (coping & resources). Defend your hypothesis: Explain in 1-2 sentences the logic/reasoning for why you set the hypothesis up this way, including scale of measurement and shape of distribution as part of your reasoning. Select the correct inferential statistic to run your analysis, being sure to explain why that statistic was chosen over other options. Correctly demonstrate the 4 steps of hypothesis testing when setting up and reporting your analysis. After running your analysis, report the necessary descriptive and inferential statistics in a brief paragraph in proper APA format, being clear on whether your research hypothesis was supported or not. (60 points) 4) Make one appropriate graph (not two) in APA format that includes both variables together to show the relationship between your variables. In the figure caption, a) explain your outcome and b) address whether the data satisfy the three assumptions of the test you chose. (20 points) 5) Appendix (for snipping & pasting relevant SPSS syntax & output to verify you did things right) (20 points)
