Purpose: For many of us, we can comprehend complex mental illnesses like schizophrenia in the abstract, but it can be difficult to empathize with some of the rare symptoms associated with this disorder. In addition, the stigma around schizophrenia prevents many people from sharing their experiences and limits/is limited by the few accurate representations that appear in the media. This discussion will help you understand how this disorder works in reality in order to increase your empathy towards those with this disorder, as well as help deepen your cognitive learning about the symptoms, effects, and treatment of this disorder.

Post: After watching the TED Talk by Eleanor Longden titled "the voices in my headLinks to an external site.", prepare and think about what it would be like to sit in the experience of what it might be like to have the positive symptoms of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia. Then, when you are prepared, play the video "audio representation of auditory hallucinationsLinks to an external site.." Then, write discussion post addressing the following points:

• Define hallucinations and delusions, including examples.
• What are the criteria to receive a diagnosis of schizophrenia? How is this different from experiencing psychotic symptoms?
• What was your experience like as you listened to the audio representation of auditory hallucinations? What do you think it would be like to have to listen to that audio for 24 hours, or for 2 weeks? What insights does this give you on the experience of those with auditory hallucinations?
• How can you increase empathic behavior toward people who experience psychotic symptoms? (Consider the additional resources on microaggressions for ideas)
