Case Details: You finally have the opportunity to sit in on a very rare brainstorming meeting with the management team in the division. They are working on developing solutions to an ill-defined problem regarding a research initiative. During this process, the General Manager uses what he calls "the tried and true method" for coming up with the best ideas. As you take a seat to watch the process, you realize quickly this method is flawed. A "brainstorming" session begins with a simple shout from the General Manager asking for new ideas for research.
There is silence for a few seconds before the first idea is shouted across the room. Immediately, someone disagrees with the idea, and two new ideas are offered. Before long, it is hard to distinguish between ideas and critiques, and people begin judging the ideas using very different criteria. One group talks louder and more insistently while another starts to withdraw. Several people pull out their technology and start tapping on the screens, and it is clear to you that this has officially become an unproductive brainstorming session. Apparently, this is the standard method for the entire company, not just this division.
