Q. Affects on Authority

The article that I chose talks about authority and Max Weber's bureaucracy theory. The article first talks about the three different types of authority and why Weber questions why people obey orders. In Weber's management theory, he lists those three types of authority to be: traditional, charismatic, and legal-rational models. Weber says that each authority will provide obedience but will all serve a different purpose in organizations. The Weber bureaucracy emphasizes that it is form of organization and management. Weber taps into why people obey and the submissive side of humans in organizations. The importance of this article says that the concept bureaucracy continues to be the most important part of organizations. According to Weber, authority is evaluated as the power of command. Weber attributes three types of authority in this article.

The article explains the social structure in society and their economic values as the reasons for the difference between authority types. The article then discusses the different types of structures and how Weber concluded each of those structures. Legal Authority is the authority structure that Weber links back to his bureaucracy theory. The theory explains why in organizations why those in power must have a staff to be effective. This shows that in organizations the staff that will obey the rules given by those in authority.

Weber states the features of contemporary bureaucracy and how the general rules are determined by laws and regulations. The article then dives deeper into those specific rules and the specific scope of authority. The article goes into the officer positions and how the social status of officers determines where they fall. It talks more around social status and class and how that can contribute to job security. If one is well liked and popular, they are more likely to have better job security according to Weber.

The fact that bureaucracy is in almost all large-scale offices and organizations, shows that it is not possible to separate politics and administration from each other. The sources of bureaucracy are too large to be underestimated. (2021)
