[1] William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is one of England's greatest national heroes. He wrote poems and plays for the theater and in his earlier life was also an actor.

[2] Shakespeare was clearly a man of many talents and produced a lot of work in his rather short life. Very little, however, is known about his private life. We know that he married at the age of eighteen and had three children. We also know that his first child was born just six months after the date of his wedding.

[3] The years 1585-1592 are known as Shakespeare's "lost years." There are stories of him illegally hunting animals and at one time being a schoolmaster. But in truth, none of these stories can be proven.

[4] Despite such mysteries, we know that in his twenties he moved from his hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon and began a successful acting career in London. It was while he was employed at the theater in England's capital that he began to write plays and formed his own company of actors. It is thought that he stopped working around 1613, at the age of 49. By that time, he had written 38 plays and 154 poems.

[5] Interestingly, the exact date of his birth is actually unknown. It is commonly believed, however, that he was born on April 23the same day that he died at the age of 52. His death was unexpected, but the amount and quality of his life's work continue to keep the name of Shakespeare alive.
