Q.1 Set. (C) A packed tower of unit cross sectional area is used to absorb component A from a gas steam containing a mixture of A and B using 10% sulfuric acid. The initial concentration of A is 1%(v/v) and 99%(v/v) has to be cleaned. The feed gas and liquid rates are 900 and 1300kg/m2.h, respectively. The overall mass transfer coefficient kgg is 1000kg/m3.h(p, bar), pressure is 1atm and temperature is 25C. Calculate the time required to decrease the initial concentration of sulfuric acid to one-third and the height of packing required if the absorber uses 550kg of acid from storage tank which is scrubbed and recycled. Assume the molecular weights of A and B as 31 and 21g/mole, respectively. (10 Marks) Q.2 Set. (A) A mixture of 45mol%A and 55mol%B is subjected to continuous fractionation in a tray column. The feed is a saturated liquid with rate of 120kmol/h and reflux ratio is maintained at 2.0. The distillate and residue contain 95% and 5%A, respectively. Determine the ideal number of stages by plotting operating lines for rectifying and stripping section, if the relative volatility is 2.3 . Identify the location of feed tray. (10 Marks)
