QUESTION 2 Answer BOTH parts (a) and (b) (25 marks) A liquid phase reactant A with concentration CAo is passed through a Mixed Flow Reactor (MFR) followed by a Plug Flow Reactor (PFR) in series with volumes V1 and V2 respectively. The volumetric flow rate of the reactant is vo and it undergoes a second order reaction, 2A R, with rate constant k. (a) Derive an expression for the final conversion achieved at the outlet of the PFR in terms of the operating parameters provided. (10 marks) (b) On a particular day of operation, a fault occurred in the MFR and it was decided that the MFR will be shut down for maintenance. The feed will be charged directly to the inlet of the PFR. Design a new volumetric flow rate, vo,new, in terms of the original operating parameters that can be applied to achieve the same final conversion in the product stream. (15 marks)
