Q3: A standard 1501003mm rectangular steel tube of L-shape is welded all round to a vertical wall at O. A vertical force of F=50kN is applied at B where CB is parallel to the z axis. Neglect direct shear stress at the weld. It is required to design the weld to safely carry the applied load. Notice that the stress due to torsion lies in the yz plane, while the shear stress due to bending is in the x direction. The two are therefore perpendicular-and their resultant can be computed. As an approximation, this resultant may be assumed to cause pure shear in the weld along the weld throat. The weld leg h is not yet known. You are to submit: a) A calculation, simplified as far as possible, of the torsional shear stress at the critical point at the weld. b) A calculation, simplified as far as possible, of the bending shear stress at the critical point at the weld. c) A calculation, simplified as far as possible, of the resultant shear stress at the critical point at the weld. d) A choice of welding electrode specification and weld leg h to meet the problem requirements according to the AWS code. (See answer box d) below for the AWS code). =50kN Data: b=100,d=150mmJ=0.707h(b+d)3/6I=0.707d2h(3b+d)/6
