Q4: Five machines - broach (B), drilling (D), lathe (L), milling (M), and surface grinding (SG) - are to be arranged in a factory. The factory manufactures various types of parts, each having a different processing sequence. Hence, a process layout is preferred. The activity relationship between each pair of machines is given in the following chart. For access, safety, space for material handling carrier, and other reasons, each machine must be separated from its immediate, horizontal and vertical neighbours by a minimum of one block space, respectively. The machine dimensions in number of blocks are given in Table 2. Develop a block layout using ALDEP and calculate the overall score. (Take sweep width as 2, and suppose that the facility has 6 blocks in vertical dimension. There is no limitation in facility by means of horizontal dimension.) Broach (B) Drilling (D) Lathe (L) Machine Table 2. Machine Dimensions B E Dimension E D 3 blocks Milling (M) - L Surface Grinding M 10 blocks 6 blocks (SG) SG 6 blocks 11 blocks A 64, E 16, I-4; 0 = 1; U=0
