QIB A uniform shaft of round cross section is designed to carry a uniform load of intensity 9 and a pair of concentrated loads at the two ends. All loads are applied in the same vertical plane. The shaft is to be supported by two bearings. You are retained to locate the two bearings with an aim to reducing the bending induced stress. As advised a constraint, the bearing must be 50 mm away from the edges of the distributed load and the concentrated loads. For the parameters given below, determine (i) the best support locations for the two bearings and compute the maximum bending induced stress, (ii) the maximum bending induced stress if the two supports are at 25 mm inward from the concentrated loads. Diameter D (mm) Distributed load Concentrated load P (N) 55 intensity q (N/m) 22,000 8,000 450 350 350 450 a b Midplane All linear dimensions are in mm. B
