Quadrophobia- This is not a fear of the number four, even though the word for the number sounds very similar to the word for death in certain languages. Instead, it refers to a game that managers could play in order to report (slightly) higher EPS. Researchers have looked at firms' calculations of earnings per share (EPS). As EPS is generally rounded to the nearest penny, the 10th of a cent place determines how it is rounded (e.g., $1.234 rounds to $1.23, while $1.235 rounds to $1.24). It has been suggested that the number "4" appeared less often in the 10th-of-a-cent place than any other digit and significantly less often than would be expected by chance.
