Qualitative research is used when understanding of human phenomena is needed, and its main aim is to develop rich description and theory of naturally occurring events, It does this through exploring experiences, social interactions, meanings, attitudes, beliefs, and values of research participants within the context of health and illness. Qualitative research allows nurses to gain insight and understanding about how the people we care for experience health and illness. It also has the potential for recognizingthe need for practice changes or nursing interventions, and contributing to this.
