QUALITATIVE RESEARCH Question 1 Consider the case below and answer the questions that follow. Russia invades Ukraine In a televised speech on 24th February, 2022 at 05:55 Moscow time (02:55 GMT), Mr Putin announced a "special military operation" in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region. This area is home to many Russian-speaking Ukrainians with parts of it been occupied and run by Russian-backed rebels since 2014. To send a clear warning to other countries not to intervene, Mr. Putin warned that any intervention from outside powers to resist the Russian attack would be met with an "instant" and devastating response. He said ....anyone who might be tempted to meddle in the ongoing events: whoever tries to stand in our way or create threats for our country... people should know Russia's response will be immediate and lead you to consequences you have never encountered in your history". According to Mr Putin, Russia was intervening as an act of self-defence and do not seek to occupy Ukraine but seek to demilitarise and "de-Nazify" the country. Minutes later, missiles and airstrikes strucked throughout Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, shortly followed by a large ground invasion from multiple directions. In response, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy severed bilateral relations and enacted martial law and general mobilisation. The invasion was widely condemned internationally. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution which condemned it and demanded a full withdrawal. The International Court of Justice ordered Russia to suspend military operations, and the Council of Europe expelled Russia. Many countries imposed several sanctions, leading to negative economic impacts on Russia and the world economy. Protests occurred around the world; those in Russia have been met
