Queensland banana growers pride themselves on the natural quality of their product.However, they have recently had to compete with cheaper imported bananas from the Caribbean island of Laraville.The imported bananas are cheaper to produce because they are genetically modified, making each crop extremely disease resistant and therefore the yield to the farmer much greater.

Scientists have confirmed that while the imported bananas are poisonous to locusts and other crop destroying parasites, there is no evidence they are harmful to humans.In fact, the imported bananas look and smell delicious, and are selling well.

However, farmers are concerned about scientific opinion that the imported bananas do have a different genetic structure to other bananas, and the genetic modifications could be passed on to unmodified crops if they come into close contact.
