Question 1 - CI Around Proportion

A survey was taken from people at OUHSC on number of kids in their household. They randomly sampled 50 adults who came to OUHSC and asked them, 'How many children are in their households?' The results were recorded as follows:

Groups Number of Children (<18)
0 - 2 23
3 or More 27
Total 50

a) Find the SE(P) for 3 or more kids.

b) Construct a 95% CI for the true proportion of households who have 3 or more kids. This should be done by hand. Show all work.

c) Interpret your result.

Question 2 - CI Around Mean

Suppose that you take a random sample and find the following weight data of people coming to OUHSC.

145 220 175 123 125
182 209 199 201 78
132 225 215 185 52
99 138 155 122 171

a) Plug the data into SPSS to get the mean and standard deviation of the sample. Provide your output from SPSS here.

b) Use your SD from part (a) to get the SE(mean).

c) Construct a 95% CI for the true weight of patients who go to OUHSC.

d) Interpret your solution in (c).

e) Now that you have calculated a 95% CI by hand, using SPSS verify your solution by doing it in SPSS. Provide your SPSS output and here.

Bonus: If you wanted to get a better estimate of the true weight, what could you do?Explain. What would you expect about the CI in each case. Hint:Think about n and alpha
