Question 1 In recent years, international institutions such as the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have been criticised by the United States as ineffective, unfair, and outdated. First, critically evaluatefive (5) reasons how international institutions may or may not be signicant in today's international political economy. Subsequently, comment on how and to what extent international institutions are important to Southeast Asia's socio- economic development. Question 2 The Asian developmental state model is a paradigm that focuses on state-led development and conceptualises the conditions for rapid growth and industrialisation in Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan in the 1980s through the 1990s. Since the 2000s, however, scholars have argued about the demise of the developmental state, due to dense globalisation and the proliferation of global production networks. In other words, the state seems to have become increasingly irrelevant and incapable of managing economic affairs. Reflecting on current politico-economic contexts, is the developmental state model still instructive to Asia?
