Question 1 MERRIMAN UGANDA LTD Merriman Uganda Limited (MUL) deals in production of a variety of consumer goods. The company was established in 2010 by Mr. Mutugo. Since its establishment, MUL has grown because of its high quality products like soap, cooking oil, toothpaste and others. These products are also fairly priced and therefore have attracted a number of customers. MUL employs a cross section of Ugandans in its production, marketing and transport departments. It uses local raw materials but produces high quality products.Noticing that its goals had attracted many customers, MUL decided to expand its establishment by shareholders accepting to increase their share capital. But this brought Merriman Uganda Limited into conflict with the community who protested loss of their land and water pollution from Merriman's waste products. Demonstrations became the order of the day drawing government intervention to regulate operations of Merriman Uganda Ltd. That was the same time when it was noticed that Merriman had also evaded taxes for quite a long time. Meanwhile employees' salaries and payments to suppliers were no longer prompt. Much of the money had been used to service a loan from the bank used for expansion. MUL faced opposition from different stakeholders who had different interests, attitude and feelings. They all devised different measures to ensure that their stake in the company was upheld. A series of meetings that were held revealed that scarcity of goods and misunderstandings between the marketing and production department had denied quality products to its customers, who had joined consumer protection organization to ensure quality restoration. Before long, many of its stakeholders including the government threatened to close the enterprise, suppliers were more than read to sue Merriman Uganda Ltd,while sit down strikes by employees were becoming the order of theday.

BUKERERE UGANDA LIMITED (BUL) Bukerere Uganda Limited (BUL)is a limited liability company that was established in the 1990s by Mr.Baryatunga.He secured some funds from his brothers and from Mr. Mahoro who works in United Kingdom.BUL is engaged in the production of soft drinks, one of the competitive processing industries in Uganda. Products

include Cola, Orange, Mango, Strawberry, and others. The company has beaten all the odds and competition to be the leading beverage industry in Uganda. This has been courtesy of Mr. Baryatunga who instilled ideas and skills of effective controlsystem in his employees. Management has emphasized regulating the quality and quantity of the products put on the market through a strict control system. From the beginning, management of BUL kicked off by setting up quality standards of their products. Such standards are unique and have helped the company to keep a float in the competitive business environment. Some of the staff at the company have been purposely selected to monitor the production process. These include Mr. Kato and Mr. Magulu whose work is to ensure that the different lines of production produce similar drinks from the first bottle to the last. These two staff enjoy what they do since they are not questioned when found tasting the drinks from time to time. When deviations from the expected are noticed, the manufacturing process is halted until the expected quality is restored. Such has minimised the rate at which BUL incurs losses. Mr. Baryatunga has been keen to reward the gentlemen behind quality control with medals and cash. They have been loyal to BUL by keeping secrets of the company. Together with line managers,they have been able to detect serious deviations unusual in the production process.Whenever such happens, immediate attention is paid to the causes of mistakes so that corrective measures are put in place to normalize the situation.This has led to effectiveness and efficiency in production of beverages, hence customer satisfaction, which is good feedback to management on the status of the organisation. Other employees in their departments have learnt a great deal from Mr. Kato and Mr. Magulu.They have embraced the control process in place to enhance discipline. They work according to expected work rules and standards.No major mistakes are common since management and everyone else is aware of the expected standards. They can detect problems and their causes whenever they arise. This has made the decision making process at BUL easy.
