Question: 1) What are the features/shape of a bonding energy curve that would lead a material to have a high coefficient of thermal expansion? 2) Internal combustion engines made of ceramics would have a much higher efficiency (e.g. better gas mileage) than those made from cast iron, due to the lower density/weight and low thermal conductivity of the ceramic. Why havent ceramic engines been widely adopted?
