Question 14 The following is a summary of the cash book of Max Young for the month ending 31 July 2019:- Cash Book 4 Opening balance b/d- Receipts 8,632 - Payments 65,000 - Closing balance c/de 66,592 >7,040 73,632 73,6324 On investigation you discover the following: - 1. Bank charges amounting to 320 are shown on the bank statement but have not been entered into the cash book. e 2. A cheque drawn for 410 has been entered in error as a receipt in the cash book. 3. A cheque for 80 has been returned by the bank marked 'return to drawer' but it has not been written back in the cash book. 4. Dividends received amounting to 60 was transferred directly to the bank and not entered in the cash book. 5. The opening balance in the cash book was brought down in error and should have been entered as 9,052.- 6. The final entry in the paying-in book shows a deposit of 10,432 which was not credited to the account by the bank until 2 August 2019. 7. Three cheques paid to suppliers for 836, 1,600, and 1,300 were not presented to the bank until 5 August 2019. 8. The bank has debited a cheque for 300 in error to Max Young's account. 9. The bank statement at 31 July 2019 shows an overdrawn balance of 696.- Question 2 (January 2020) The following information has been obtained from the books of Tom Limited for the year ended 31 December 2019: Opening payables control account balance at 1 January 2019 237,200 Cheque payments to payables 187,130 Discounts received during the year 32,100 Contras 9,124 Credit purchases during the year 156,242 Credit notes received during the year 48,770 On extracting a list of balances from the payables ledger (purchases ledger), the accountant found that they totalled 81,804. On further investigation the following errors were discovered: 1. An invoice for 4,000 in respect of purchases from Midge Limited was not recorded in the purchases day book. 2. Purchases from Mr Dimice of 2,000 have been wrongly entered in Mrs Barton's individual account in the receivables ledger. 3. The purchases day book contained a transcription error whereby 25,340 was brought forward onto the following page as 43,340. 4. The discounts received column of the cash payments book has been overcast by 2,100.- 5. Invoices amounting to 18,120 have been included in the control account but not in the purchases ledger. 6. In preparing the list of balances from the purchases ledger, credit balances of 1,268 were incorrectly analysed as debit balances. 7. A contra of 3,940 has been posted to the control accounts without updating the ledgers. 8. Discounts received from Shirley Limited of 30 were recorded as 102 in the cash book and omitted entirely from the postings to the purchases ledger. Requirement (a) Prepare an adjusted payables control account and reconcile this to the total list of balances. 12 Marks (b) Briefly explain why it is necessary to prepare a bank reconciliation statement
