Question 2 A hot water condensate available at 95C is used to heat up a 4 kg/s of a Dowtherm Heat Transfer Fluid from 10C to 60C. The hot water is cooled to 70C in the process, for which a double pipe heat exchanger is available. The following information is provided for the Dowtherm Liquid and for the hot water condensate: Property Specific Heat Capacity, Cp Thermal Conductivity, k Viscosity, m Density, r Water at 77C (avg. Temp) 4198 J/Kg.C 0.668 W/m.C 0.000372 N.s/m 974 kg/m Dowtherm, at 40C (avg. Temp) 1496 J/Kg.C 0.138 W/m.C 0.0027 N.s/m 1044 kg/m i. Determine the Heat Duty and Hot Water Flow Rate from the energy balance and determine the LMTD (for a counter current operation) based on Temperatures of the liquids - inlet and outlets. ii. With the data available to you, calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient of this heat exchanger. iii. Estimate the Area of the Heat Exchanger The dimensions of the Tube are also given below: Inner Tube Dimensions: 40.8 mm ID; 48.3 mm OD Outer Tube Dimensions: 77.9 mm ID; 88.9 mm OD Thermal Conductivity of Copper 379 W/m.C
