Question 2 A powered boat is setting out to cross a river. The boat's motor exerts a force FM and the river's current exerts a force Fc on the boat. The boat's owner has forgotten to untie the tether which had secured the boat to the shore and this is exerting a force FT on the boat. The forces are shown in the figure. FT FM Fc Figure 3 Powered boat setting out to cross a river The diagram has a wavy line at the top and the bottom depicting the banks of a river with a simple boat shaped figure in between. There are three arrows pointing out from the centre of the boat. One arrow is pointing due north and is labelled FM representing the boat's motor, the second pointing due East is labelled Fc representing the river current and the third pointing Southwest is labelled FT representing a force on the boat where it is secured. a. i. If the system shown is in equilibrium (i.e. it is static), describe how the forces operating on the boat relate to one another. ii. Write the relationship mathematically using vector notation. iii. Draw a vector diagram showing how these forces can be added together and how the heads and tails of each vector relate to each other (see the Part 2 book, Figure 13.25 (p.197) for an example of a vector diagram). b. The magnitude of forces FC and FM on the boat are: IFMI = 495 KN |Fcl = 684 kN What is the magnitude of FT? Show all your working clearly and give your answer in KN to 3 significant figures. c. The tether has been released and there is now a resultant force FR. i. Describe, in words, what this means for the movement of the boat. ii. Draw a new vector diagram showing the forces acting on the boat including the resultant force.
