These then become unwritten rules. Hence you would hear; "Always tell the truth" (norm) or "honesty is a virtue" (value). Moral standards are learnt from childhood, from those around you and from the society at large. However, it is not easy to do what is morally right or good. The judgement we make is normally nonmoral. Question 3 (Ethics) (20 marks) Moral development shows that as we grow, our values change drastically. Lawrence Kohlberg confirms that people's moral values develop more or less in the same manner. Kohlberg then grouped these stages of moral development into 3 levels, each containing 2 stages. Identify and discuss Kohlberg's levels with their relevant associated stages of moral development. (2) Philosophers like Elliot Turiel and others help up distinguish moral from nonmoral norms by outlining characteristics that relate to moral standards. (a) Describe six characteristics of moral standards. (b) Outline three kinds of ethical issues. (6) (c) Ethical relativism is the view that different societies have different moral beliefs, there is no rational way of determining whether a person's action is morally right or wrong other than by asking whether the members of the person's own society believe it is morally right or wrong. Discuss objections to Ethical Relativism. (4)
