(a) The toggle mechanism concept has been used to modify the force supplied by a hydraulic actuator, CE, to keep the gate closed. Determine the force needed by the hydraulic actuator to just keep the gate shut (i.e. it is just ready to open!). (b) Now, determine the force needed if the members BC and CD were removed, and the hydraulic actuator were just oriented horizontally and applying a force at B. (c) Compare your answers in (a) and (b) and comment on the effectiveness of the design. Using what you learned in Question 1 what design changes would you suggest to improve its effectiveness?
