Question 3: Gary Sims is the manager of the research department at Fosgar Manufacturing. He is quite happy that the new information system is almost complete. He knows the company-wide system the IT specialists are building will help his department immensely. However, the IT specialists were unable to add in some of his requests for his own department. The IT specialists recommended that Gary let the business experts in his department build the small information system. Gary is not too comfortable with this idea so Catherine recommends that he talk to you. You meet with Gary and he suggests that you talk to the young business experts right away. You are amazed at how technology literate the business experts are. You tell Gary that you are very confident these young business experts can build the system for the department and you explain why. Some of the other researchers in the department have approached you with concerns about the success of the new system the business experts are building for the department. They are worried that the young business experts are relatively new to the department and they won't build the system the researchers need. You explain to the researchers that as part of the process of building this small system the business experts will meet with them to discuss their needs early on. You also explain how they can be involved in the later stages of system development to ensure their needs are being met. One year later, Gary Sims calls on you again. He says that the new small system built by the business experts was widely accepted by everyone in the department but when many of the business experts got jobs at other companies the small system was no longer being used. What do you think went wrong? Using the terms and concepts from your textbook, discuss the issues in this question and explain what you will say to Gary and to other researchers in the department
