Question #3: Global Health and Globalization

Global health and well-being is top of mind for most of the world right now, as we confront the risks and challenges of the current COVID-19 pandemic. But, COVID-19 is not the first pandemic to afflict the globe, and it will not be the last. Our current global health crisis has made apparent the urgent need for effective international cooperation in the face of such pandemics, as well as the undeniable reality of profound global inequalities that make successfully addressing health crises even more challenging.

A.) Why is the impact of epidemics and pandemics generally more severe in parts of the Global South, than it is throughout the Global North? Identify and explain at least two differences between the Global North and the Global South that impact the spread of disease and pathogens in different regions.

B.) How has the ongoing HIV/AIDS pandemic affected individuals, communities and states throughout Sub-Saharan Africa? Critically discuss the political and economic impacts of health crises by identifying and discussing at least two distinct consequences of this pandemic for Sub-Saharan Africa.

C.) How might pandemics such as HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 best be addressed? Identify two distinct strategies to address these kinds of health challenges, and explain who should be responsible, in your view, for implementing these solutions.

D.) What interferes with effective global coordination in the face of these health crises? Identify two distinct barriers that get in the way of successfully combating global health crises, such as HIV/AIDS and COVID-19. How might these obstacles be overcome?
