Question 3.

Review the data in the Excel file in the tab for Question 3. Included in this data set is information regarding a large number of emergency room departments across the country.

  • ID: The sequential identification number of each ED (this variable WILL NOT be used in your data analysis - it is only for the identification of each case)
  • SqFt: The size of each emergency department in square feet
  • FTEs: The number of full-time employees in each ED
  • REVENUE: The annual revenue of each ED in 2020

Complete the analysis per the instructions below and interpret your results. Make sure you explain your data thoroughly (do not just say "the mode is 3.5"), and if possible, give some additional thought or meaning to your interpretation. In your Excel file, please highlight your solutions - mean, mode, median, fractiles, etc.

  1. Using an Excel function (fx), calculate the basic descriptive statistics (mean, median, and mode) for the SqFt, FTEs, and REVENUE variables.
  2. Using Excel's data analysis toolpak and "Descriptive Statistics," compute the descriptive statistics for each of the three variables.
  3. Compute the 3rd quartile, 4th decile, and 60th percentile for each set of the variables.
  4. In your Excel file, interpret the central tendencies and fractiles for each of the three variables (compare them and tell me what you can see in your results). Be as detailed as possible, and give me an overall interpretation of each variable.

FRACTILE INTERPRETATION: When using Excel for the fractiles, use the "Percentile" function and convert your quartiles or deciles to percents. For the fractile interpretation, take the fractile you are dealing with (say 65%) and then make sure you understand the variable in question and the units for that variable. Suppose you were looking at the annual revenues for several hospitals. You run the fractile at 65% and come up with 25.4 million dollars. In that case, you would say, "65% of the hospitals in the sample have annual revenue of 25.4 million dollars or less." Now, insert your given fractile (generally stated in a percent), add the value you derive from that fractile, and make your interpretation in terms of that specific variable. Just make sure you understand the given units for your variable (deaths per 1,000 individuals, percent of gross assets, number of cases per year, etc.).
