Sifiso Gumede, the production manager at magna engineering sat in his office blankly out of the window as he was in a state of shock. five minutes earlier ha had received a call from the CEO about the poor quality of exhaust systems that was supplied to a major customer. almost 65% of cars with their exhaust systems were failing within the first two months of installation. this was a major blow for magna engineering as their reputation was being damage not to mention the significant losses that would be incurred (estimated at R 4.5 million).

in trying to find the problem, Sifiso looked at the quality reports and to his horror, he found that poor quality steel was received from their supplier and the production supervisors, and the quality officers did authorize the use of this steel even though they knew that this would fail in the market. on questioning these staff, he was informed that one of the senior managers had instructed them to use the poor-quality product as they had promised the customer delivery.

sifiso called you in for a meeting and has requested the following:

• construct an ethics training program, minimum requirements and compliance for all staff including senior managers, board of directors and supervisors, quality personnel and operators.
• thereafter, develop a system for magna engineering that will assist in monitoring and enforcing ethical standards.
