Question #3

The Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in1912, after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. The sinking caused more than1,500 passengers and crew todie, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in modern history. The Titanic catastrophe is not only famous for themovie, but also it allows several types of statisticalanalyses, and is therefore a popular case study in statistics texts. One of these analyses focuses on the followingquestion: who survived thesinking? "Women and childrenfirst" is a code of conduct dating from1852, whereby the lives of women and children were to be saved first in alife-threatening situation, typically abandoningship, when survival resources such as lifeboats were limited. But is it indeed true that women and children had the best perspectives tosurvive? This data set has the survival data for the passengers on the Titanic. Also, for eachperson, the data set indicates if they were an adult orchild, theirgender, and the class they were staying in.

Create a Data set

Now turning to the main question: who had the best perspectives to survive? Create a contingency table of Class and Survival, with Survival as the row variable, and use column percents, row percents, and total percents to find the survival rates

Find the probability that a randomly selected person is a crew member.

_______% (Round to two decimal places as needed.)

Find the probability that a randomly selected person is a crew member who survived.

_______% (Round to two decimal places as needed.)

Find the probability that a randomly selected personsurvived, given that the person was a crew member.

______% (Round to two decimal places as needed.)

Find the probability that a randomly selected person was a crewmember, given that the person survived.

______% (Round to two decimal places as needed.)

Find the probability that a randomly selected person was a crew member or did not survive.

______% (Round to two decimal places as needed.)

Are Class and Survival dependent or independent variables? Provide examples to support the answer.
