Question 3. Your boss at your high paying job tasks you with designing a CSTR reactor configuration to produce 200 million pounds/year of ethylene glycol. The reactor(s) are to be operated isothermally. A 1lbmol/ft3 solution of ethylene oxide in water is fed to the reactor, together with an equal volumetric solution of water containing 0.9wt% of catalyst. The reaction rate constant is 0.311min1. You may assume first order reaction kinetics. (a) If 80% conversion is to be achieved, determine the necessary CSTR volume. (b) Graph a Levenspiel plot for this reaction. Sketch the volume required from part (a). (c) For 80% conversion, what volume is required for each of two identical CSTRs in series? Represent these volumes on Levenspiel plots. (d) For 80% conversion, what is the volume required for each of two identical CSTRs in parallel? Assume equimolar split of the feed. Represent these volumes on Levenspiel plots
