Question 4(35 marks)
An experimental study was conducted involving the pyrolysis of rice hulls to assess the use
of renewable resources. Following the pyrolysis process, the composition of the resulting
gas was determined to be 6.4%CO2,0.1%O2,39%CO,51.8%H2,0.6%CH4, and 2.1%N2.
This gas was introduced into a combustion chamber at a temperature of 90F and a pressure
of 35 in Hg, where it was burned with 40% excess air at 70F and a pressure of 29.4 in Hg. It
was found that 10% of the CO remained after combustion, while the product gas consisted
of CO,CO2,H2O,O2 and N2.
a) Draw and fully label a flow diagram of the system
b) Provide the balanced stoichiometric reactions that occur in the given system.
c) Using atomic balances, determine the composition of the product gas leaving the
combustion chamber.
d) How many cubic feet of air were supplied per cubic foot of entering gas? (8 marks)
e) How many cubic feet of product gas were produced per cubic foot of entering gas, if
the exit gas was at 29.4 in Hg and 400F?
