QUESTION 4 (a) State THREE (3) advantages of a belt drive. [3 marks] (b) List TWO (2) examples of belt application in industry. [2 marks] (c) A blower is driven by an electric motor through an open belt drive that connects two pulleys on a parallel shaft 3 m apart as shown in Figure Q4(c). The 1 m pulley is running at 200 rpm driving the 0.4 m pulley. Due to the belt slip on one of the pulleys, the velocity of driven pulley is 400 rpm. The belt has a mass of 1 kg/m length and the maximum tension is not to exceed 3 kN. If the coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.3, Calculate: 0.5 m 3 m 10.2 m Figure Q4(c): Open belt system. (i) The tension of the belt. [9 marks] (ii) The torque on each of the two pulleys. [4 marks] (iii) The power transmitted by the belt. [2 marks] (iv) The power lost in friction. [5 marks]
