Question 4 This question is worth 20 marks. Figure 2 shows a uniform horizontal beam which is 6.5 m in length and has a mass of 150 kg. The beam is supported at its right-hand end by a trestle and at the left-hand end by a vertical wire attached to a ceiling. The beam supports a mass of 450 kg which is centred over a point 4 m from the right-hand end of the beam. Figure 2 The beam (not drawn to scale) Show description a. Draw a free body diagram showing all the forces acting on the beam and the distances from the right-hand end at which each force acts. (4 marks) b. State, in words, two conditions that must be satisfied for the beam to be static and stable. (2 marks) c. For each of the two conditions you have identified in Part (b), using the information contained in your diagram, write an equation that must be satisfied for the beam to remain stationary. Do not include units in your equations. (4 marks) d. Calculate all the forces experienced by the beam. Give your answers to 2 significant figures. (6 marks) e. In a similar situation, the wire has a diameter of 12mm, and is under a 3749N load. Calculate the stress in the wire, giving your answer to 2 significant figures. (4 marks) Take the acceleration due to gravity, g, to be 9.8 m s.
