Rachel owns a fruit and vegetable shop. Her shop is allowed to remain open during the coronavirus pandemic as long as social distancing rules are complied with.

One morning Rachel is working in her shop. Her employee Harvey is behind the till while she is restocking the apples. Rachel sees a man, Mike, walk into the shop and go directly to Harvey without doing any shopping first. This gets her attention.

Mike walks up to Harvey and says,

"I have coronavirus. Give me all the cash or I'll cough on you."

Mike seems agitated and is sweating. Harvey says,

"Ok, ok, no-one wants any trouble, I'll give you the cash."

Rachel has heard the conversation. She yells,

"Hey, get away from him! Get out of my shop!"

Rachel picks up an apple and throws it at Mike while continuing to yell at him to get away from Harvey and to leave. The apple hits Mike in the head. Mike seems surprised by this development and just stands there, not knowing what to do.

Rachel throws five more apples, four of which hit Mike in the head and body.

Mike decides that he's had enough. He starts slowly backing away, keeping his eyes on Rachel to avoid the apples. Rachel keeps throwing apples, hitting Mike twice more as he backs away. Once he's a safe distance away, out of Rachel's range, Mike turns and runs off.

Has Rachel acted in self-defence?
