RAIL COSTING ASSIGNMENT Get page 35 of the Railroad Cost Model and attach it with your calculations as needed to this sheet. (See the attachment) You have been asked to calculate the cost of a movement for a new Superior Southern Rail system shipper. You have the information provided in the Costing Handbook. For the following movement, what is the railroads unit cost per... Total Cost? ______________________ Carload? ______________________ Revenue Ton? ______________________ Revenue Ton Mile? ______________________ Gross Ton Mile? ______________________ Total Car Mile? ______________________ Bison Beer of Joliet, Illinois, has contacted Superior Southern to get a price on a shipment of their product (Beer) for a special weekend concert in Kingsland, Indiana. The shipment will involve the movement of 800 tons of beer, all as one shipment. The product will be loaded on a spur at the Joliet yard, requiring nothing more than a yard move to pick it up and add it to a train at Joliet. [1] The train that is proposed for the movement between Joliet (IL), and Bennett Yard (IL) is the Superior to Bennett Yard daily freight (SUPBYD-xx). The Super Bird is designed to average 7,500 gross tons and uses the newer SD-60 type locomotives. Because of traffic and grades, it averages 17 miles per hour. However, it must be powered sufficiently to never slow to less than 20 miles per hour when going up a hill and 50 miles per hour on the flat track. The SUPBYD uses a three-person crew (engineer, conductor, brakeman) to allow for some local switching along the line. [2] The train that is proposed for movement further south is the Bennett Yard (IL) to Manchester (KY) freight, known as the BYDMAN (Big Man). This train is designed to average 8,500 gross tons and uses the newer SD-60 type locomotives. Because of traffic and grades, it averages 20 miles per hour. However, it must be powered sufficiently to never slow to less than 25 miles per hour when going up a hill and maximum track speed on the flat track. The BYDMAN uses a two-person crew (engineer, conductor) due to little enroute switching. The train will drop off the Bison Beer shipment, and other shipments, at Tipton (IN) for movement on to Kingsland (IN). [3] The Kingsland Local (L-TK01), known as the Kingsland Turn, makes a daily weekday roundtrip from Tipton to Kingsland and back, serving all customers along the line. This train averages 5500 tons and has a four-person crew (engineer, conductor and two brakemen) and uses rebuilt GP-30 locomotives. Because of the great amount of work it performs along the route, the train averages 10 miles per hour. The train is to be powered to go no less than 25 miles per hour on any hills, and the maximum speed allowed on the territory on flat track. [4] Each car involved can handle 50 tons of beer and weighs 25 tons empty. Because the cars are to be shipped out of the Tipton area by another customer, there is no backhaul to be charged to Bison Beer. [5] For diesel fuel costs, use $2.10 per gallon instead of the $0.80 as shown in the costing book.
