Rather than planning to avoid a risk, mitigation deals with the aftermath of a disaster and the steps that can be taken prior to the event occurring to reduce adverse and, potentially, long-term effects.

Student groups will have to create a document that provides assistance from two levels:

a. What steps could have been taken prior to the disaster event so that the harsh effects could have been avoided

b. What steps could be taken in the aftermath to remedy the situation, and create a strategy moving forward, so similar disasters do not occur in the future

Fire!

Your business operates out of a small, but very old factory building in downtown Toronto. Due to the age of the building, some of the current 2022 building and fire code regulations are out-of-date. Your business produces cases for laptops on an assembly line.

Last week, you had a visit from the Fire Chief, and were fined $5,000.00 as a result of your building not meeting current fire safety standards. In addition, you were fined an extra $2,000.00 because the premises did not have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Just yesterday, an employee was smoking on the line, and the ashes from a burning cigarette caused a massive fire. In addition to destroying $1,000.00 worth of raw materials, the laptop case, stitching machine was damaged beyond repair. Furthermore, two of your employees were not aware of the fire (because of a lack of smoke alarms) and suffered smoke inhalation. Both of these employees are suing for damages, and want to take you as the CEO of Laptops-Tops Inc. to court, in a law-suit for over $60K.

What can you do?

Pls draft a list of steps that could have been taken to avoid or mitigate this disaster. Also, pls draft an additional list of steps that can be taken in order to remedy the situation, and create a strategy moving forward, so similar disasters do not occur in the future
