There are two options for this week's assignment. In either assignment, it's not ok to reply with "I am not on social media, so I do not have an opinion," or "I am not a high school student, so I do not have an opinion." have your assignment from the perspective of an informed citizen or community member.
The NYSBA article contains a summary of information about the recent increase in hate speech on social media. Your assignment this week is to use one page to tell me if you think laws are able to help combat the increase in hate speech (i.e. can the government help?), you can also address whether you think the government shouldn'ttry to help (maybe you think it shouldn't). This assignment may be very personal, and you can feel free to have about your personal experience. But your response does not need to be personal.
Optional assignment: I understand that thinking and do about hate speech might not be something you want to participate in this week (or ever!). As an alternative, you may also write one page about social media and school, and whether you are satisfied with the state of student speech rights.
