Gretchen and Helmut Schoenfield met in college, fell in love, and were married. Within three years, they had two children. Meanwhile, Gretchen left college to raise the children, and Helmut was on his way up the corporate ladder. Within five years, they were divorced, and the court awarded them shared custody of the children.

Gretchen returned to college, finished her degree, and now is also climbing the corporate ladder at a local bank. In the interim, Gretchen's parents have retired and moved to town. Now that they have the time and money, they have spent a substantial amount of their time with the grandchildren. This has given Gretchen the freedom to pursue her career.

Gretchen has asked Helmut to informally change the custody arrangement so she will be the custodial parent.
