Read response below and state your thoughts.

A social worker has been working individually with a 17-year-old male for issues related to depression and family dynamics. The social worker and the young man have been engaged in services/counseling for the past 2 years. The client has trust issues with his parents, especially his father. Ten minutes prior to the next scheduled appointment, the client's mother calls the therapist on the phone. The mother explains that the child has run away, and the mother has reported the child missing to the police. The mother further reports that the client's cousin has been driving the client around town. She wants the social worker to phone the police immediately when the client arrives and to have them arrest the cousin for unlawfully detaining the minor child. After the phone call, the social worker checks the waiting room and sees the client there. He is talking with a young man, likely his cousin. The challenges identified in this scenario is that the therapist would have to take away the client's freedom in his choice of running away from home. He is a minor and the law will require the therapist to contact the police if a missing juvenile is in their presence. By calling the police, this could jeopardize the relationship and bond the therapist has with the minor. He may no longer want to engage in the services with that therapist. The minor may not want to engage in therapy with anyone if he feels his trust is broken with the therapist he has already bonded to. Additionally, if the therapist doesn't get the alleged cousin arrested; the parents can decide to discontinue services with the therapist. I would explain to the mother that if the minor does indeed show up the to facility; I will contact the police. However, I will explain to her that I would not request the officers to arrest the cousin for allegedly unlawfully detaining the minor. I would explain to the mother that is something she can explain further to the police as she would know more about why she feels the child is unlawfully detained. I would then contact my supervisor to quickly inform of the situation and ask for any tips or guidance. Additionally, I would contact the dispatch for the local police department explaining I may have a potential missing juvenile in my office and request for their presence. As I await the police arrival; I would ask my client to come to the office and speak with me. I would remind the client of the privacy and confidentiality; however, explain that I am also bound by legal practices to ensure his ensure his safety. I would explain to my client that his mother did contact me to advise that he had ran away. I would explain to the minor that I have already contact the local police department and his parents as I am required to contact the police to advise of his safety at the facility because he was still a minor. I would make the child aware that the police and his parents may indeed show up at the facility. I would ask him how does he feel about all of this? I would want to find out why the minor ran away. I would need to ensure there were no concerns of abuse with the mother and father; prior to returning the child home. In order to gather this information, I would need to hold a short session with the minor.
