Read the article on the "Value of Education" and answer the questions below. (suggested time: 25 min) Do schools really prepare young people for real life? There are many examples of successful people who never went to university. Similarly, are managers these days really employing people with qualifications in subjects like History and Literature in areas such as business analytics and logistics? Research seems to indicate that what employers really want are people with experience which isn't traditionally part of a school or university curriculum. To demonstrate one side of the argument, we can look at the example of a businessman from Melbourne who is the director of a large electronics company. He left school at the age of 16, after having failed his exams and his first job was helping out with his parents' small cleaning business. After a few weeks he had saved $200. With this he started buying small electrical goods, which he then sold at a profit at the local market. He now has an estimated fortune of $140 million, which he earned entirely by himself. Examples like this highlight that many valuable skills can be learnt outside the classroom. The ability to work hard and be self-disciplined is more important than learning facts or memorising poems. Regardless of whether or not you have a degree, companies increasingly want employees with good communication skills, otherwise known as "soft skills", as well as qualifications. These are qualities that can be developed through experience in the real world. However, schools do play a crucial role in readying students for the real world. As children spend time with other people in school, they learn how to interact in society and respect rules and authority. As we progress into higher education, we learn how to manage time and how to deal with deadlines. We improve our independent and critical thinking, learn how to express our opinions, and how to deal with complicated ideas. Therefore, education is not only about facts and figures- it's also about developing important personal qualities.
